Activating prior knowledge

My best friend wrote a restaurant review. What aspects do you consider are important when you talk about a restaurant?

Task 1: Write your answer.

Task 2: Read the model

Read this model and look at the boldfaced (in bold font) sentence. It shows the main idea.

La Rosa Naútica  My favorite Peruvian restaurant is called La Rosa Nautica. The service is great. I also like their food very much. Their soups are delicious. Start with their ceviche or their garden vegetables. It's very fresh and healthy. For the main course, you can choose from many delicious meals and dishes. Try their tamales with green sauce or red sauce, for example, or their roast beef with vegetables. I like their roast beef with vegetables best. The waiters and waitresses at La Rosa Nautica are fast and very friendly. You might need a reservation on the weekend because sometimes it is full. It's becoming more and more popular these days. Go there and you'll find out why!

Task 3: Now look at the short texts. Underline the sentence that shows the main idea. Look at the model as an example.

1. The Coffee Cup is a popular place to study. I go there after the university closes. The Coffee Cup gets crowded at about midnight. I like their coffee very much because it is delicious.  
2. Mama's Pizzeria is on the corner of Firth Street and Main Avenue. It's easy to find and close to everything. Mama's closes at 11:30 p.m. The Pizzeria on First Street closes at 10:00 p.m. 
3. I went to Rizzoto Friday night. The service was really bad. We waited forty minutes for our food. My friend waited for an hour and a half!
4. The Chinese's restaurant near my home has lots of dishes from all over China. I read the menu for 20 minutes. The menu is eight pages long! I am going back there with my sister next week.
5.  The Seaside Sunset is very romantic. They have big windows so you can watch the sunset The rooms are very quiet and you can listen to the best Turkish music. The owners are opening another hotel in ten months.

Writing Tip

The main idea is the most important idea of a piece of writing. The main idea is different from the topic. It gives an idea about the topic and is often a sentence.

Before you write. 

Think of restaurants you know. What is your favorite? Why? Make a list of three to five reasons. Talk to your partner. Then write one sentence that tells why the restaurant is your favorite.

Task 5: Write about the restaurant. Look at the model, the writing Tip and the link. Use the main idea sentence that you wrote. Why is this your favorite restaurant? Use ideas from your list. Then give information that explains your main idea.
